Portland and Salem HBAs come together in friendly competition to raise PAC funds for elections
The HBA of Greater Portland and the HBA of Marion & Polk Counties held their second annual “Showdown at Shortland” golf event on Friday, September 18, at the unique and fun Shortland Golf Club in West Linn.
While the event is a fundraiser, we have to at least start by congratulating the Portland teams for pulling out our second victory in a row and retaining the coveted Shortland Cup. It was all tied with two holes left. The last two holes included on that was a Portland win and then a second that was a tie, which gave Portland the overall Cup victory by one match! Congrats also to one of the Portland Parr teams, which took home first-place medallions as the team with the highest number of holes won in their match.
The event pits 19 3-person teams from Portland against a similar number of teams from Salem. The teams play head-to-head in a Ryder Cup-style best ball scoring format. The course is the first of its kind in the country – an innovative par 3 short course with synthetic turf tees, greens and bunkers.
While the bragging rights are nice, this event is a fundraiser. Portland and Salem HBAs raised $10,000 for our Political Action Committee, which will support both local and statewide candidates running for office who have received HBA endorsements. On top of that, the event is also just a fantastic opportunity to have fun, build relationships with those in our neighboring market to the south, and have some good competition.
We want to especially thank Parr Lumber, along with their partners IWP and Weyerhaeuser, for being the primary event sponsors. Also, to NW Natural for covering the costs of food and beverages for the participants. And the Portland team's shirt sponsor was Jordan Ramis.
Thanks to the generous support of these sponsors, 100% of all the registration fees were able to go to our State PAC, which was over $5,000 from each of the Portland and Salem HBAs, meaning the event raised over $10,000 in total for our PAC.
We look forward to a 3rd Annual Showdown next September, and based on the fun, camaraderie, and friendly competitive spirit between the Portland and Salem HBAs, we know next year’s will be even better.
